"Jazz enables us to understand and enjoy the individuality of
each person. It encourages us to listen to one another with empathy.
Jazz music teaches the respect, patience, and attentiveness required to
participate in today's worldwide conversation."
-Wynton Marsalis, World Renown Jazz Musician

"When school music programs and Community Arts organizations do cooperarative events where students can interact with visiting professional artists, both the school program and the community is enriched.  Jazz, as an American art form, is a perfect medium for the students to gain a greater exposure because it enables the young musician to think and feel as they experience the transcendental and vernacular."
-Alvin Batiste, America's premier Jazz Clarinetist

As stated by world renowned musician Wynton Marsalis, “Jazz enables us to understand and enjoy the individuality of each person.  It encourages us to listen to one another with empathy.  Jazz music teaches the respect, patience, and attentiveness required to participate in today’s worldwide conversion.”  Join the students and faculty of the Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport as we present our 7th annual Yazzy Young People Celebrating Jazz concert on Friday, April 17th, 7:00 p.m., at the Strand Theatre located at 619 Louisiana Avenue in downtown Shreveport as we celebrate jazz appreciation month.  The theme for this event is, “Yazzy Presents Showtime at the Apollo, with a Salute to James Brown & Etta James”, in commemoration of the Apollo’s 75th anniversary.  Our guest artists include:  Devin Phillips, jazz saxophonist from Portland, Oregon; Michael Ward, jazz violinist from New Orleans, LA; and Shreveport’s own Dorsey Summerfield and The Polyphonics.

The Yazzy Young People Celebrating Jazz concert is designed to showcase local talented youth collaborating with renowned professional artists and to recognize the dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence of educators and local performing artists. As we chart the journey of the Apollo Theatre, let us applaud these young artists, dancers, singers, and musicians as they guide us through the revolution of the Apollo, a place where stars are born and legends are made, with musical selections from Benny Goodman, Buddy Holly, James Brown, Etta James, and Richie Valens just to name a few!

Come see Shreveport’s best student musicians in a show that you don’t want to miss! Ticket prices are as follows:

Adult: $12.00
Senior Citizen: $10.00
Children/ Youth (18 and under): $7.00
