Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport 2010 Yazzy Summer Morning Mix
“Yazzy: Takes the Music & Dance”
The Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport (TPA) will present its grand finale performance for the 18th Annual Yazzy Summer Morning Mix program. The Yazzy Summer Morning Mix is a 6 weeks cultural arts program taking place from June 14th thru July 24th, Monday thru Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 noon at Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy, 2550 Thomas E. Howard Drive, Shreveport, LA. For the past 6 weeks, participants have received training from teachers and artists in instrumental music, strings, theater, dance, voice, visual arts, and the history of costumes, makeup, and hair.
The grand finale performance which is a culmination of the summer program will take place on Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th in Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy Auditorium, 7:00 pm nightly, along with a visit to the Yazzy visual art exhibit. The theme is “Yazzy: Takes the Music & Dance”. “Yazzy: Takes the Music & Dance” will take a snapshot of dance through the history of jazz music, with songs such as “Sing, Sing, Sing”, “Satin Doll”, and “The Girl from Ipanema”. Yazzy will venture from Ella Fitzgerald to The Sugar Hill Gang with dances like The Cha Cha, The Waltz, The Swing, and Hip-Hop dances. The hope of Theatre of the Performing Arts is to demonstrate how jazz has been a vehicle for dances throughout history. The Yazzy students have worked hard to polish instrumental music, vocal, and dance routines.
Yazzy Summer Morning Mix faculty consists of Dorsey Summerfield, Yazzy Project Coordinator; Donald Walters & Charles Walker in instrumental music; Beverly Houston in strings; Julie B. Lester & Natorshau Davis in voice; Chelsey Davenport & Tracy Grissom in dance; Jerlonda Thomas Snowden in theater; Edward Allen in visual arts; and Kendra C. Gray in costumes, makeup, and hair. Tickets are $5.00 for children/youth; $7.00 for senior citizens/ military (with ID); and $10.00 for adults. Group rates are available for groups of 20 or more at $7.00 each. Tickets can be purchased at the Theatre of the Performing Arts office, 4005 Lakeshore Drive, Monday thru Friday, between the hours of 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, or on the days of the show at Green Oaks Performing Arts Academy box office.
